S. Maria di Leuca
Leuca,
framed between the depths of the Ionian and the Adriatic seas, is
one of the most desired seaside places, both for its extraordinary
beauty and its mild climate.
The sanctuary, built in recent times, stands on an open space
on the promontory, where once was a christian temple.
A beacon towers over the place, being built at a height of
102 meters above sea level and being 47 meters high. From
its top, the island of Corfù (Greece) on one side, and the
mountains of Calabria (another italian region) on the other
side, can be seen. Many are the caves along the coast, such
as the monumental one known as that "of the three doors",
that "of the giants" and that "of the devil", that can also
be reached from the mainland.
