Lecce
Lecce,
with the architectonic wealth of its palaces and with the ancient
beauty of its roads, with numerous churches, with an amphitheatre
and a roman theatre can be considered the greatest centre of the
southern baroque.
To mark the historical centre of the city there are wide tree-lined
avenues and three doors : Naples door, that is most ancient
, S.Biagio door, Rudiae door. The heart of Lecce is S.Oronzo
public square, dedicated to its protector, in fact in its
beautiful one half there is a obelisk with the statue of the
glorious bishop. After to have crossed the tight ways of the
centre is reached in Dome public square, here the baroque
expresses in one simpler and stricter way.
The architectonic block of the Dome comprises the palace of
the bishop and that of the seminary; continuing it is arrived
to S.Croce , on the façade of this church, between
beautiful “putti”, stranges birds, flowers and
leaves. The palace of the “Celestini”, beside
the church, resumes the reasons of the baroque enlivening
then with the windows. Lecce therefore has been considered
the beautifulst city in Apulia, admired for its monuments
for many people
